a wish for you....

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope your day is full of love and laughter.

We will be listening to Bing Crosby, sipping hot cocoa, bonding over a sibling gift exchange, making Christmas candy, and savoring (both!) mamas' cooking.  Very excited!

What traditions make up your Christmas?  May all be warm and bright wherever you might be on this special day. :-)

All my love,

Jordan

wrapped with love....

giving: a minimalist gift guide series

Just 7 more days till Christmas! Are you excited?! I know I am. A more challenging question--are you ready? Yes? Man, you're a superhero. No? I've got good news--the holiday season is a fluid experience.

There will probably always be some last minute details, like the ingredients you have to purchase at the latest possible moment so they are fresh, or the special gift you have to snag on the fly because you didn't know that person was coming to Christmas dinner until 5 minutes ago.  My advice? Do what you can ahead of time and then be flexible and go with the flow. It's going to be wonderful no matter what. :-)

Just in case you might still have some gift wrapping to do, here's a little inspiration and a few tips and tricks to make the process go smoothly. Enjoy!

lower cost gift wrap

Ever notice that the prettier the wrapping paper, the more expensive it seems to be? Get some "wow" factor on the cheap by wrapping your presents in an inexpensive "base layer" (like Kraft paper or a simple solid color, and then make a "belly band" around your gift using your prettiest paper as an accent around the middle.  Garnish with some pretty ribbon and a bow and voilà! you have a beautiful package for a fraction of the cost.  This is especially helpful with your larger gifts--there's few things more disheartening than using an entire roll of wrapping paper on one present.

Little native trees

Speaking of garnishes, if you are looking for some creative options, look to the great outdoors. Greenery is something you may be able to scavenge for in your own backyard (Home Depot and Lowe's also offer clippings from their Christmas trees for free--great for presents and holiday decor alike!). Other fun items to utilize include pine cones, berries, feathers, and twigs.

Make it fun! Have a gift wrap gathering with friends where you can socialize, swap materials and ideas for more variety, and share some tasty appetizers (some wine never hurt either). It's always easier when there are some additional fingers around to help you tie bows too. :-)

Natural

Although it's great to be able to bust out all the wrapping in one fell swoop, it can often become an ongoing process. If you can, find an out-of-the-way space to spread out and have a "wrapping station" (my mom stakes a claim on the family ping-pong table each year, which, of course, is a fabulous working surface, but not everyone is so lucky).

If you are like me and the only uninhabited open space is a cold, dark, unfinished basement, I suggest using a large Rubbermaid bin to contain everything* between wrapping sessions so you can tuck it away until it's needed again.

*Have lots of unwieldy rolls of wrapping paper?  Use a small, cute trash bin to hold them all!

Let me know if these hints were helpful and good luck with all of your holiday endeavors!

Cozy Butternut Squash & Chicken Stew

I swear, this time of year is actually conspiring against me.  There are so many wonderful holiday treats about and yummy (heavy!) meals.  Add that to the fact that it's dark by late afternoon and the walk from the car to the gym induces shivers, and you have one entirely unmotivated me.  Do you feel that way too?

If you've been craving some cozy comfort food but feeling like you need to behave now and then, this recipe is it! Tasty? Oh my, yes. Healthy? At a little over 300 calories per serving, you better believe it. Aroma? I’d say it gets a “15” on a scale of 1 to 10.

It all started with the butternut squash I had lounging on my counter and my deep love for stew when there's a chill in the air.  Even though it's low in calories and fat, a bowlful of this hearty stew easily satisfies my craving for comfort food. Also, butternut squash is high in Vitamins A and C, and quinoa gives it an extra punch of protein and fiber, so you know you're getting a well-rounded meal. The kicker was a burst of freshness from a handful of chopped parsley. For us, it is a cold-weather favorite!

FYI, this stew keeps really well, so if you want some leftovers for the week, go crazy and double the recipe!  :-)

Ingredients

1½ lb. butternut squash, peeled, seeded and chopped into ½-inch pieces
3½ cups chicken stock
1½ lb. boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts (or use a rotisserie chicken!)
1 tbsp olive oil
2 medium yellow onions, finely chopped
½ tsp kosher salt
4 cloves garlic, minced
1½ tsp dried oregano
1 can (14 oz) petite diced tomatoes
⅔ cup uncooked quinoa
1 can (15 oz) red kidney beans
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
¼ cup minced fresh flat-leaf parsley

Instructions

Steam the butternut squash until barely tender, about 10 minutes. Remove half of the squash pieces and set aside.

Steam the remaining squash until very tender, an additional 4 to 6 minutes. Mash this squash with the back of a fork. Set aside.

In a large saucepan set over medium-high heat, bring the chicken broth to a simmer.

Add chicken thighs, cover, and cook until chicken is cooked through, about 15 minutes (if you are using rotisserie chicken, you can skip this step!).

Transfer the chicken thighs to a plate and allow to cool. Pour broth into a medium-sized bowl.

Return the saucepan to the stovetop and lower heat to medium. Add olive oil.

Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is starting to turn brown, 8 to 10 minutes.

Add the salt, minced garlic and oregano. Cook, stirring, for 1 additional minute.

Drain and rinse kidney beans.

To the saucepan, add tomatoes, kidney beans, butternut squash pieces, mashed butternut squash. Stir to combine.

Stir in reserved chicken broth and quinoa. Bring to a simmer, cover and cook until the quinoa turns translucent, about 15 minutes.

Shred the chicken with your fingers or a fork.

Stir the chicken, olives and pepper into the stew and simmer, uncovered, to heat, about 5 minutes.

Stir in parsley and serve.

Enjoy, my friends (and let me know, what are your cold weather favorites?!).

stockings 'n stuff

Hey there, everybody!  What are you up to this week? I chose "Let It Snow" as my holiday theme, I think because it's my subliminal Christmas wish--there's nothing like a blanket of white to truly get in the spirit.  I don't know though, it's still been feeling like autumn still.  Guess we'll see!
Have you thought about stocking stuffers yet?

Those can be the little detail that gets overlooked until the last minute. Just in case that's still on your to-do list, here's some fun, unique ideas:

What are some other clever stocking stuffer ideas?  What are you hoping to find in your stocking this Christmas?!  I'd love to hear your ideas!

lovely links

Happy Friday, my friends!  Do you feel ready for the whirlwind of the holidays?!  Less than three weeks to go.  Cue the excitement and maybe a smidge of anxiety--do you have any shopping left to do, gifts to wrap, or guests to prepare for?  I feel like I'm going to blink and it will be January already.

If you're the same way, don't forget to take a deep breath and savor little moments along the way. That's something I work on every day and it's hard!  Pinpointing your most important priorities can help.  It's possible to make your house a winter wonderland, go to three ugly sweater parties, send out 200 Christmas cards, host one side of the family for Christmas Eve, travel to celebrate with the other side of the family for Christmas Day, and throw a New Year's party--but you may drop from exhaustion and not wake up until the 4th of July.

Focus on what's truly important to you and make some amazing memories this year instead of running yourself ragged.  And remember that the more priorities you have, the more organized you need to be!

If you're feeling like you need a little stress relief or a five minute escape from whatever you're doing, here are some fun and interesting links from around the interwebs:

For any ballet lovers out there--my current favorite documentary on Netflix.
German breakfast is my favorite!

Have a wonderful weekend!

a little new year's glam!

Things are a little quiet around the blog this week, but don't let that fool you--behind the scenes, it's been a whirlwind!  I'm working on getting the house decked in everything bright and merry (some fun holiday decor ideas are headed your way!) and for Long Ago Love, I'm getting all of the details in place for a fab New Year's masquerade bash.

Italian Masquerade Mask - Gold Pearl Flowers

The theme this year? Glitz and glam all the way.  There is no better time of year for it!  Throw in a few masks for a little mystery, some dance-worthy music, and plenty of delectable finger food, and we've got ourselves a fabulous fete!  I've also added some chic art deco elements for some chic vintage 20's flair. :-)

What are your plans through the holiday season?  Is your house a winter wonderland?  Are you baking Christmas treats?  Hopefully your days are full of friends and family and the chaos that make this such a special time of year.  I'd love to hear all about your December adventures!

Stay tuned for more Long Ago Love sneak peeks and lots of fun holiday hints, tips, and general shenanigans!
